Hemorrhoid Banding

What is it?

Hemorrhoid Banding, using the CRH O’Regan System® is a simple, painless and highly effective procedure that can be performed in less than a minute. How simple is it? Our physician will place a tiny rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid. The banded tissue then shrinks and falls off within a day or so, usually without you noticing. Once the hemorrhoid is treated, so are your symptoms.

Why would you need this procedure?

More than 50% of us will suffer from symptomatic hemorrhoids by age 50. Hemorrhoids affect most of us and are nothing to be embarrassed about!

Typical hemorrhoid symptoms include:

  • Itching: Prolapsing hemorrhoids deposit mucus on skin
  • Bleeding: Tissue gets damaged and starts to bleed
  • Swelling: Internal hemorrhoids cause external tissue to swell
  • Soiling: Prolapsing tissue interferes with anal closure
  • Prolapse: Tissue protruding from the anus during defecation

Preparation?

There is no prep needed for this procedure, and you can drive yourself to and from the appointment. You will be at Huron Gastro for about 30 minutes, and the procedure itself is under 5 minutes. No sedation is required.

What does the tool used for the procedure look like?

How does the procedure work?

  1. The device is generally smaller than a finger and is placed less than 2 inches inside the anus
  2. A small rubber band is placed in an area with few nerve endings, making the procedure painless
  3. The band will typically fall off after 2-3 days, most likely without you noticing it
  4. This will result in the loose tissue scarring back into place, eliminating the tissue prolapse and accompanying symptoms

How effective is this procedure?

99.1% effective in eliminating symptoms

Recurrence rate is on par with surgery without all the complications:

  • 5% after 2 years
  • 13% after 3.5 years
